Power supply issue with Polygon Scanners & Polygon Scan Heads
It has been recommended that a DC power supply without a crowbar (over-voltage protection) circuit be used to run polygon scanners and polygon scan heads. The reason is that the BDC motor generates back EMF when the polygon decelerates. It is normal for a motor to do this but if the power supply has crowbar protection, the crowbar will kick in and damage the motor controller.
The problem is, it is getting more difficult to find a power supply without crowbar protection. Fortunately, the solution is simple. If you want to use a power supply with crowbar protection, insert a power diode in the circuit to prevent the power supply from seeing the back EMF. A 15A 200V ultrafast diode would be suitable.

Power diodes are available free of charge to users of Precision Laser Scanning polygon scanners and polygon scan heads. Just contact us at info@precisionlaserscanning.com
